Finished, Toast, Over - When It Happens to You ...

"American allies fear Biden is finished and can’t beat Trump"  Politico, July 6, 2024

That's the horrific term - finished - that careerists fear. Now it's being applied to Joe Biden's reelection efforts.

Sometimes, in our darkest moments of reflection, we put that label on ourselves.

Often, whether the assessments come from external forces or from our own inner turmoil, it can be a positive development. We have direction:

We can let the pursuit go. In our professional life, that's known as career change. That's hard, as I discuss in this article in O'Dwyer's Public Relations, but increasingly necessary in this volatile era. The wise get out before they're finished.

We can do extensive course correction, as did media personality Megyn Kelly.

We can ignore and blow it off, as did politico Winston Churchill.

There is that very old adage in life and in careers: It's not what happens to you, it's how you handle it.

A curious phenomen took place among some boomers at the beginning of when digital entered the realm of content-creation. Born was the medium of the blog. There were a number of us boomers who, after being finished off in running our enterprises, spotted the opportunity as a Next. I was among them, moving on to even becoming an influencer. Major media covered our stories since it was amazing that boomers could get the hang of that digital technology.

Another aspect of handling it is what to do when you have invested in those who are being condemned as finished.

A classic example are large elite progressive law firms which contribute heavily to the Democratic Party. Open Secrets documents that they include Kirkland & Ellis, Paul, Weiss and Akin Gump. How much will they feel compelled to "punish" those who are judged to help engineer any catastrophe for the Democratic Party? But, more importantly, how will the law firms regroup?

As a coach I am close to the emotional front lines. It is the norm for those caught in a downward trajectory, like Biden, to engage in magical thinking. They are convinced they can turn things around.
