"Love" - So Often Defined as a Form of Madness ("Baby Reindeer" Makes It into That Box)

 In the Netflix one-season hit series "Baby Reindeer" Donny's real-life girlfriend Teri notes that he seems to be enjoying the phenomenon of stalker Martha Scott. Teri, a therapist, may be onto something. 


As a Tarot reader too often I encounter both parties being sucked in, deeper and deeper, into a force field of illusion. Reality could be too mundane. Usually it's not enough fun. Overall, their everyday existence is, well, disappointing. 

Typical is this pattern: creating a momentum in a relationship that has no basis. Or shouldn't have. 

An example is that the connection is experienced as the platform for a deep long-term permanent exclusive commitment. Then somehow a bit or even a large chunk of real life intervenes. There is then a tragedy of heartache. That could apply to both. There had been a shared-craziness bubble.

It is possible but difficult, of course, to explan the dynamics of this to the devasated former lover or lovers. The New York Times documented in 2021: Tarot readings can deliver self-awareness. 

As in "Baby Reindeer" the unreal state of being could have been triggered by a deep sense of empathy. Donny feels downright sorry for the oddball middle-aged woman who floats into the pub and can't afford a beverage. His objective is to lift her up emotionally. She is interesting in a bizarre way. That is a welcome distraction from a deadend job. She not only misinterprets the signals. She pushes for more and more. He loses control of the situation. 

Most romance contains aspects of this illusion. The old saying is that love is blind. It can even become obsessive and controlling, yet not reach the state of psychosis that is the saga of "Baby Reindeer."

I started my full-time Tarot reading practice intending to focus on careers. Very soon what became obvious was that the demand was to bring clarity to romantic relationships which were evolving into wish-fulfillment and losing groundedness. It is rare that there isn't a piece of "Baby Reindeer" in even the most "healthy" love connections.

From Watergate Glam to Offering Buyouts to Reduce Manpower By 240: The Washington Post

It's another sad day in what had been glam.  The Washington Post announced its plan to downsize manpower throughout the organization by 240. That will start with buyouts.  CNN admitted it's not ready for the future. The Wall Street Journal has gone part pop culture to attract a younger audience. The average age of its reader is 59. We already know ABC probably will be up for sale. Establishment media is making its point: Its existence is uncertain. What could replace it could be digital apps on phones. Public relations folks will pitch their clients' stories to the apps. Or maybe PR also will go poof. Everyone will be an influencer. Data or the gut for your careers and communications?
